AMELIA MOORE'S LATEST MIXTAPE RELEASE

As a homeschooled girl born in Georgia, Amelia Moore found an escape in music, singing in choir and performing in local theater. Now based in Los Angeles, the 24-year-old singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and artificial redhead is making a name for herself in the music industry. The alternative R&B tracks that blend her strong vocals with catchy hooks and clever, contemporary lyrics have already earned her over 2 million monthly listeners on Spotify, a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a title as Apple Music’s “Up Next” artist, and a Camp Flog Gnaw debut. Never Mind had the pleasure of attending a conference where Moore spoke on her brand-new album, titled he’s still just not that into you!.

When asked about the connection between her latest mixtape and her 2024 project, he’s just not that into you!, Amelia explained that the thought of creating a part two to the record had always been a thought in her mind. The final product, however, came out greater than she had dared to hope for. She said she felt as though the honesty and the silly, lighthearted tone of the album truly showcase her personality, even more so than her previous projects. ‘Spelling bee’, a song that was made in collaboration with songwriter Julia Michaels, is a perfect example of how lighthearted and silly some of the tracks are. Amelia mentioned that she had expected to write a vulnerable and emotional song going into the writing

session, but the end result was something entirely different. The track is about spelling out what you want to say because you’re afraid to express exactly what you want from someone. To use the artist’s own words: “‘spelling bee’ is just about being horny as hell, y’all.” That doesn’t mean that writing songs isn’t an intimate process for Amelia, though. She revealed that her songs come from a really vulnerable place and that they’re written because she has to get them off of her chest. This sensitive and emotional side of the artist comes to the foreground in ‘That’s all they really want’, an interpolation of ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Fun’ by Cyndi Lauper. Amelia confessed that this track was the most difficult to finish, since it went through many different versions before she found the perfect sound for the final product. She explained that some of the songs on the album had been in the works since 2023, when Amelia participated in a writing camp in Malibu, along with a number of producers who were involved in the creation of he’s still just not that into you! and her 2024 project. Amelia revealed that some songs that found their origin in the writing camp have stood the test of time, in the sense that she is still actively working on them to, hopefully, release them in the future.

The artist pulls inspiration from various places, including TV shows like Sex and the City and How I Met Your Mother, and continues to develop her sound by seeking out collaboration with different people whose work excites her. However, it is evident that growing up as a homeschooled girl has had a big impact on her, since many of her main inspirations can be traced back to this period in her life. The artist started playing her first instrument, the violin, at a very young age, which fueled a love for strings that still lasts today. Symphonies, such as the LA Philharmonic Orchestra, inspire Amelia in many ways, since she didn’t come into contact with a lot of secular artists. She admitted that she didn’t get to experience the Georgia music scene and its diversity until a later age: “There is a lot of really inspiring music coming from Georgia and Atlanta, but I was homeschooled until I moved to college when I was 17. I was really sheltered, and I didn’t really get to listen to or experience a lot of amazing things that are happening there.”  The first secular artist Amelia engaged with was Justin Timberlake, when her mom allowed her to listen to the 2020 Experience album. She revealed that the album, partially produced by Timbaland, has shaped the way she thinks about transitions between songs, as well as harmonies and vocal production. Therefore, it was particularly special to her that she got the opportunity to work with Timbaland for the track ‘back to him’: it was a true full-circle moment for the young artist.

She already has some impressive accomplishments and collaborations to her name, but the singer hasn’t stopped dreaming. When asked what her dreams for the future are, Amelia revealed that there are a couple of producers she would love to work with. The first one being D’Mile, who was involved in projects such as ‘Die With A Smile’ by Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga and ‘Leave The Door Open’ by Silk Sonic. The second one being Mike Sabath, the producer behind RAYE’s album My 21st Century Blues, an album that changed Amelia the moment she heard it. However, the artist’s biggest career goal is playing the Super Bowl. Until that moment comes, she continues to appreciate her current position and work hard to make the best out of every performance, asking herself, “What is my version of playing the Super Bowl right now?”

Over the years, Amelia Moore has learned many things about herself as well as the music industry. Something she did wish she had known before she dropped out of college to pursue music is that she shouldn’t take criticism too personally: ‘A lot of what happens that you think is about you, you just have to let it roll off your back.’ The artist referred to a Victoria Monet interview when she was asked what advice she would give to artists starting out, because it was advice she had always taken to heart. What that came down to was that if you can sit yourself down and feel certain you want to pursue this career for at least 10 years without a guarantee it’s going to work out, then you are probably doing the right thing. "‘Cause girl, it be taking that long; it really does. I’m 24 now, and I started taking myself seriously as an artist when I was 15, so you have to really hang in there. […] It’s just about hanging in there and not giving up. That’s what I would say.”

Amelia’s album, he’s still just not that into you!, available to stream here, is a well-balanced mix between playful alternative R&B tracks and a number of relatable, emotional tracks. The project is a true testament to the artist’s vocal abilities, versatility, and knack for songwriting. At the end of May and early June, Moore will be hitting the road to perform a number of mixtape release shows, so make sure to grab tickets to a show near you!
