The Best Looks from the 2025 Governors Awards

The 16th annual Governors Awards has happened, giving us a sneak peek of fashion to come this upcoming awards season. The Governors Awards is a ceremony that the Academy hosts each year to present lifetime achievement awards to those in the film and entertainment industry. However, it is also the first ceremony that unofficially kicks off the Hollywood award season. The carpet was filled with many stars as they pre-game their Oscar season fashion. From Cynthia Erivo to Jacob Elordi, many of this year's movie stars were in attendance. For this ceremony, many opted for pastel and softer looks rather than the bold and daring ensembles typically seen on the red carpet. Many of the gowns had an almost sleepwear inspired look. Soft silks, tulles, slippers, and robes were seen being worn on the carpet. With the pastel trend on the carpet, it was no surprise that Dior was by far the brand seen the most at the ceremony. Mia Goth, Ariana Grande, and Natalie Portman all wore the signature brand. But for suits, there was a clear vintage trend that could be seen on the carpet. There were multiple vintage-inspired suits, giving them an almost costume like look. Overall, this year's awards season fashion seems to have a much more softer edge to it.
Here are some of the best looks from this year's Governors Awards:
Ariana Grande in Archival Dior

Pink is still on theme for Ariana Grande as she wore an Archival Dior by John Galliano dress. This look has generated a lot of buzz online. The dress comes from Dior’s spring 2007 collection. It has also been seen on other celebrities in the past, such as Emily Rossum. With Grande in the thick of the Wicked for good press tour, pink seems to be her go to color. This dress looks stunning on her, from the asymmetrical cut to the gorgeous beading. It’s clear Grande is going all in as Glinda for her awards season style.
Chase Infiniti in Custom Louis Vuitton

One of the most unforgettable looks from the night was Chase Infiniti in a custom Louis Vuitton dress. The multiple layers of tulle and the way it’s layered perfectly are amazing to see. It’s such a unique take on the classic ballerina gown. The shoes are also the perfect choice for the dress. I like that the accessories didn’t drown out the dress. The dress looks stunning on her. This is not the first time Infiniti has worn a custom Louis Vuitton dress, as she wore another memorable gown at the Academy gala for her film One Battle After Another. With a gown like this, I hope Louis Vuitton continues to dress her.
Damson Idris in Custom Ralph Lauren

Damson Idris wore Ralph Lauren on the carpet. The look is a custom suit made by Ralph Lauren, but it resembles a suit designed for their fall 2017 line. Idris has had a big year with the success of F1. This is one of the best suits of the night. The brown satin lapel, paired with the matching satin bow tie, quite literally, ties the look together. The shoes were an interesting choice. The suit was styled with a pair of Ralph Lauren’s Alonzo Bullion velvet slippers. The slippers have been a topic of debate, whether they distract from the look or not. But personally, I think they bring something unique. It’s a fun signature touch.
Elle Fanning in Custom Gucci

Pastels are obviously a trend for this carpet, as Elle Fanning wore a baby pink custom dress by Gucci. Sequin dresses have really made a comeback in recent years, as this dress is covered in sequins. But I love that even though they cover the dress, the sequins are very subtle. The dress looks gorgeous on her. I love the way her makeup perfectly accents the color of the dress. The entire ensemble gives off the classic Hollywood vibe. Fanning has had a busy year with two films; Sentimental Value being her most recent. After seeing this look, I’m excited to see what she will wear for the rest of the award season.
Mia Goth in Custom Dior

Even though Mia Goth starred in a classic monster film this year, she wore a delicate custom Dior dress on the carpet. The silhouette of the dress is beautiful. I like the way the layers build upwards. The dress resembles a huge ribbon tied together and hanging off her. The mini train of the dress also adds to this silk sheet effect. It is a perfect example of modern Dior. My only gripe with this look is that I feel her hair could’ve been styled differently to match the vibe of the dress more. Goth just came out of the Frankenstein press tour. I'm curious to see if she will have more dark romantic looks for the rest of the award season.
Hailee Steinfeld in Stephanie Rolland Spring 2025

With all the pastels on the carpet, this dress was definitely a standout from the Governors Awards. Hailee Steinfeld wore a dress from Stephanie Rolland's Spring 2025 collection. It is such a beautifully sculpted dress. The way it flows on the top and waves down the bodice to the sheer bedazzled fabric on the knees is incredible. I especially love how the train looks like a little black cloud. The silhouette of the dress is just so unique. With the movie Sinners being one of the most memorable films of 2025, it seems Steinfield isn't afraid to stand out this award season.
Cynthia Erivo in Givenchy Spring 2026

Cynthia Erivo wore this turquoise Givenchy look on the carpet. The robe is from Givenchy’s Spring 2026 ready-to-wear line by Sarah Burton. No surprise Erivo chose a greenish hue, as she was also in the thick of the Wicked press tour. However, I feel this look suits Erivo’s daring sense of style. The floral decals on the coat are beautiful. The matching clutch is also a nice addition to the look. The flowers are almost reminiscent of Van Gogh's. The fringe at the end of this robe makes the flowers appear to be melting off her. Another subtle reference to her role in Wicked.
Jacob Elordi in Custom Bottega Veneta

With one of the biggest period pieces of this year under his belt and another one on the way, it was no wonder Jacob Elordi wore a suit with a vintage flair. The suit was custom made by Bottega Veneta. The long suit jacket and the silk white shirt with an ascot inspired tie are on brand. Styled together, it looks really nice. It’s a very classic look, which seems to be what Elordi has been leaning into with his award season style. But I think the shoes could’ve been changed as they don’t seem to match up quite as well with the rest of the suit. Elordi’s style is definitely signaling the return of classic Hollywood style for male actors.
Dakota Johnson in Spring 2026 Valentino

Dakota Johnson wore a beautiful sea foam green Valentino dress. The dress comes from Valentino's Spring 2026 ready-to-wear. It seems Johnson has been opting for greens, blues, and blacks for her red carpet fashion recently, after the release of The Materialists this year. The color looks gorgeous on her. The perfect draping of the dress is what makes it truly stand out. It almost looks like silk sheets hanging off her. The look itself is simple. I would’ve liked to see maybe a bigger statement necklace. But I think, especially with this dress, simplicity really works.
Joe Alwyn in Custom Dior

Joe Alwyn is gearing up for the opening of his upcoming film Hamnet, which explains this vintage inspired suit he wore on the carpet. It is a custom suit by Dior. It’s very clear that the look is supposed to emulate the period piece he is in. But the overall suit doesn’t look like a costume. The navy blue velvet suit jacket styled with the popped white collar looks good together. Velvet suits are always a hit or miss, but the jacket was styled together nicely. I also like the added brooch. It’s a great, subtle vintage-inspired look.
